I know this may come off as an odd post, but I think you should be on a lot of mailing lists (including mine…sorry… Shameless plug – haha!) Here’s why – I’m subscribed to lots of email lists. Some of them are ministry related, others are more motivational, others are clothing stores. Why? Because I send emails to our church every week and I’m always looking for ways to make sure our emails get opened and read. I keep a folder on my Mac just for emails that I find clever, effective, or funny. Email is one of the ways … Read More
Sunday Stuff…
– Great day at Calvary. – I had been out the last 2 weeks, so it was great to be back in the saddle. – We let everyone know that my wife Carey is pregnant! – To say I’m excited is a total understatement! – Carey is due at the beginning of January, so I’m guessing it’s going to be a Christmas baby! – I taught Romans 6 today. Talked about how to have victory over sin – Looking forward to Romans 7 next week. – Even if you aren’t an expositional teacher, I think teaching through a book of … Read More

“Micromanaging” and other Dirty Words
Let me just come out and say it: most leaders don’t micromanage. In fact, most people have no idea what micromanaging is. Example: Asking your graphics guy to design a flyer for an event and following up a few days later is not micromanaging. Asking your graphics guy to design a flyer for an event and standing over him while he designs it and commenting on each color is micromanaging. But let’s be honest: most Pastors aren’t standing over the shoulder of their staff. In fact, most Pastors suffer delegating to the point of abandonment (which is another problem all … Read More
The Scariest And Most Important Factor in Developing Leaders
Leadership development is one of the most rewarding things a leader gets to be part of. It’s amazing to see someone go from infancy in Christ to maturity. But the challenge of developing leaders to make sure that responsibility is increased as the level of commitment goes up. I’m not interested in creating a culture where leaders just sit in meetings and talk. I want a culture where leaders are actually leading! To ensure this, you must give up and coming leaders responsibility and ownership as the level of commitment is increased. If you don’t, you will simply create an … Read More
Getting Started in Leadership Development
Since we released our resource, “The Leadership Pipeline”, earlier this year, I’ve been getting some questions about where to begin in starting to develop leaders. I discuss this in great detail in the resource, but I’ll share a few things here: 1. Start training your existing leaders – Giving training to your existing leaders makes them better leaders and allows you to create the model for the next level of leaders. 2. Keep a list of potential leaders – We keep a list of people that we have our eye on at Calvary. This list is those who are serving faithfully … Read More
Staffing: Where do I start?
When it comes to staffing, most leaders start with a person they’re looking to hire. I believe that’s the wrong approach. When you’re looking to add someone to your team, the place to begin is with a job description. This is important when staff come to you and say, “I need help. Can you hire me an assistant?” The first thing that should should happen is for that staff member to write a job description of the position. The key here is to answer the questions: – What skills does this person need? – What responsibilities are required? – What … Read More
Sunday Stuff…
– Not much of a Sunday stuff today – I didn’t teach, but I heard Pastor Mark did a great job teaching Romans 5. – I got an eye infection that my doctor said was contagious, so I’ve been in quarantine since Wednesday. – I’m feeling a lot better. My eyes feel good and I no longer look like I’m stoned 🙂 – Looking forward to hanging out with my friend Casey Graham this week. I guarantee that I’ll be fired up after we meet 🙂 – After 2 weeks of not being at Calvary, I’m itching to get back … Read More
“I’m not an evangelist” is no excuse!
I am amazed that God has allowed Calvary Fellowship to be much an evangelistic church that reaches primarily unchurched people. The reason I’m so amazed is because I’m not an evangelist. I’m a Bible teacher. That’s my sweet spot. Teaching through books of the Bible and feeding God’s people. While that’s my primary gifting, my passion is to see lost people found. Nothing gives me greater joy than to see a lost person give their life to Jesus and start growing in their faith. I know a lot of Pastors who aren’t evangelists in gifting and that’s their “pass” for not … Read More
