Book Review: The Feiner Points of Leadership

Bob FranquizBooks

Quite simply, The Feiner Points of Leadership by Michael Feiner is one of the best leadrship books I have ever read. If you know me, you know that I hate Pepsi, but as a former Pepso Co. executive, Feiner gives 50 leadership laws that are just so true. Here are some highlights: – What gets rewarded determines what the real values of your organization are – Leaders show people they are building a cathedral, not just cutting stone – Commitment means that to get loyalty, you must give loyalty – People need to know the score, to know how they’re … Read More

In Case You Missed it…

Since I was on vacation, there have been several great posts that I hope you saw… – Jason had a great post/ picture of Snoop Dogg reading an Andy Stanley book on a plane. Hopefully he won’t “Drop it like it’s hot”… – Charles had a great post about Ricky Ryan’s session at the Calvary Chapel Senior Pastor’s Conference. It makes me happy that someone so well-respected like Ricky said this. It makes me happy that CC isn’t pursuing cloning technology 🙂 – Speaking of clones… I loved what Chris had to say about church clones. Must read! – Gary … Read More

End of Vacation Thoughts…

We’re flying home today. I’ve got a few things on my mind… – I’m sad to be leaving my family in Boston. I always have a great time with them. But they’re coming to Florida in a couple of weeks, so we’ll see each other soon. – I’m excited to get back to work. This was a much needed break, but I’m ready to get back in the saddle. – I’ve learned a lot about pace and priorities this week. – I bought my yearly supply of Red Sox gear while I in Boston. – I hate flying! I wish … Read More

America’s Most Beloved Ballpark

Bob FranquizGeneral

It had been 14 years, 2 weeks, and 2 days since the last time I had been to Fenway Park. But last night my nephew and I went to see my beloved Red Sox. They lost 7-1, but it was great to be there. It was colder than I can even describe. It was like 45 degrees with the wind chill. Hot dogs, italian sausages, pretzels, and peanuts were free flowing. Sox tickets are sold out months in advance, but we ventured out and met a guy who was selling his season tickets. So we got box seats for face … Read More

It’s June…Where’s My Sweatshirt?

Seriously…it’s cold!!! My Miami blood isn’t built for this kind of cold anymore! Despite the arctic weather, Carey, Mia, and I spent the day at Faneuil Hall in Downtown Boston. No joke…it’s 50 degrees outside. Mia got a Wally the Green Monster from Build-a-Bear. They only sell Wally’s in Boston. He’s sporting his Red Sox gear and he plays “Take me out to the ballgame”. Had the best clam chowder ever here. Also, the cheesesteak I had was out of hand! I wanted to bring a little bathing suit for Mia. Carey brought warm clothes. She’s the smart one…

What I learned about Church Planting on Sunday…

Bob FranquizChurch

My buddy Bill invited me to their 2 year anniversary service in Hartford, CT. It was great! He and I co-taught the message (which is always fun) on the subject of why a person should go to church. Bill is a good communicator, a sharp leader, and a great Pastor. He’s got a good group of leaders around him. There’s no limit to what God can do here. It made me really think about church planting and guys who go to areas that are ridiculously saturated with churches. Do you know there are areas where there are zero churches reaching … Read More

Entertain Me, Please!

Bob FranquizTeaching

A news reporter asked me a few weeks ago, “Do you think there’s too much entertainment in church?” I said, “The definition of entertainment is to hold people’s attention for an extended period of time. So no, there isn’t too much.” If you ever want to be in an environment where entertainment isn’t a consideration, attend a High School graduation. This is a huge occasion in a person’s life where just about every speaker, singer, and point on the program is deathly boring. My nephew’s graduation taught me more about the importance of communication than at just about any preaching … Read More

I think I’ll go to Boston…

Bob FranquizUncategorized

I love Boston. It’s my hometown. When we got off the plane and were driving to my sister’s house, Carey said to me, “It must be nice every time you come back here.” I said, “It’s like putting on your favorite pair of jeans. They just feel right.” The weather is beautiful. All conversation is about the Red Sox no matter where you are. Dunkin’ Donuts coffee is freely flowing (We don’t use the S-word when talking about coffee around here). Being with my family has made me realize how much I miss them. It’s nice to be home…

What’s Your Plan?

Bob FranquizChurch

At our all-staff meeting today, I spend some time with our staff talking about their own personal development. I tried to share some practices beyond our own spiritual disciplines that would help us continue to grow as Christian leaders. I have found that most leaders don’t really have a plan about growing as a leader, they just think it’s going to happen by accident. What it really comes down to is being intentional. If you are intentional about losing weight, you will. If you are intentional about graduating from college, you will. But personal growth and development doesn’t happen by … Read More
