I got a great question today from a church planter who wanted to know if I do reviews or evaluations with our staff and how I do them. It’s a great question because people don’t do what you expect if you don’t tell them what you expect. So we do a semi-formal review/ evaluation towards the end of the year where we discuss job performance, ministry budgets, etc… But I also meet in a less formal way with our staff throughout the year and remind them of our A-B-C philosophy. What is that? I believe that ministries vary in importance … Read More
Full on Depression
I don’t know what I feel worse about, there being no power in church yesterday (which turned out surprisingly well) or the absolute pounding the Red Sox have taken over the last 3 days. I stayed up until 2AM watching the horror that was Sunday night’s game. This has just been horrible. I walked into the supermarket today to pick something up for Carey and I was wearing my Red Sox cap and a guy wearing Yankees shirt just looked at me with a face that could only be described the way we look at someone who’s been eating out … Read More
Blackout!
Our set-up crew arrived at the theatre this morning to no power. There was no power on our block. We called the power company and they said they’d have someone out by 10AM (Our start time). So the amazing guys who set things up every week, set everything up in complete darkness. Then we got a couple of generators and we had some power to be able to light our sanctuary. So we had everyone (including kids) gather into our main theatre. Did I mention that there was what seemed like a monsoon outside with all the rain? So doing … Read More
May I Introduce you to…
There’s a couple of blogs that I recently added to my blogroll that you may or may not know about. They’ve got great stuff, so check them out… Bill LaMorey – Bill was our administrator here in Miami until he went to go plant Calvary Fellowship in Hartford, CT. He’s a Yankees fan, but please don’t hold it against him. Actually, feel free to hold it against him! New England belongs to the Red Sox! Period. Anyway, he just started blogging, so give him a warm welcome. He’s one of the funniest guys I know and he’s the only one … Read More
Book Review: The Dream Releasers
I enjoyed The Dream Releasers by Wayne Cordeiro, pastor of New Hope Christian Fellowship in Oahu Hawaii. The book is about discovering your own God-given dreams and releasing the dreams of others as well. What I kept thinking while reading this book is how much I needed a person like this in my life at different times. It would have made things a little easier, to have an older, more experienced person in my life to bounce things off of. The other thing that stood out to me is the ability that we have to mentor young men that didn’t … Read More
Pink Slip
We kicked off our colors series this morning and talked about stewardship verses ownership. We talked about who has the pink slip on the stuff that has been entrusted to us. One of the things we have been intentional about over the last couple of years is to talk about stewardship, not just tithing. Unfortunately, in the first 3 years of our church, I’d talk about finances once a year and apologize the entire time. The health and wealth thing is pretty big in Miami (to the degree of credit card machines at the front of the stage) and I … Read More

I Want My Two Dollars!
I took my niece and nephew to Toys R’ Us today to buy them a kickball and what I experienced what a total disaster. The kickballs were on sale for $4.99. Sounds good. I picked up 2 of them and an old school wiffle ball and bat (I could have won the Cy Young award of Wiffle Ball if such an award existed – I’m that good!) Anyway, we get to the register and there’s 5 people on front of us and only 1 lane open. This sends me through the roof. (Don’t managers check sales by the hour to … Read More
