I know I’m really late to the party, but I finally got around to reading Freakonomics by Steven Levitt. All I can say is that it’s a really fun book to read. The chapter titles immediately drew me in (how can you not want to read a chapter called, “Why do drug dealers still live with their mothers?”) The book was a fun look at all the stats that people give and the societal rules they create. The book probably won’t give you much sermon material or leadership insight, but it’s a fun, quick read that will cause you to … Read More
In Case you missed It…
Here are favorite posts of the week… – My man Rod Pearcy is back in the blog game. “Welcome back…your dreams were your ticket out…” – Chris’ post was great about actually being a Pastor to those in your church. Who thought that this would become such a novel concept? – Move over Weird Al, because Perry’s posts (here and here) about being fat were great. I struggled with my weight for years until I decided I wanted to be able to serve God for a lifetime. I echo Perry’s thoughts. – Thin guys like Ben can tell us about … Read More
Shots Heard Round the World…
Mia got her second round of shots today. I think it hurt me more than it hurt her (I’ve officially become one of those parents). At least it was a tie. We both cried. Mommy cried. We were a mess. It was easier than the 2 months shots (those were brutal). What was great is that the Dr. said Mia looks and acts like a 6 month old! I love being a dad!
Watermark Review…
My buddy Bill LaMorey just read my book Watermark and reviewed it on his blog. It shouldn’t surprise you that Bill gave it a good review, seeing how Bill is one of my best friends. Anyway, you can read his review here. You can buy Watermark here. Or if you want to give these to people in your church who are thinking about baptism or being baptized, you can email me and I can get you a better deal than the Amazon price. Shameless promotion over…
14 Years Ago…
It was 14 years ago today that I gave my life to Jesus. My wife Carey made that decision on the same day as well. It’s the best choice we’ve ever made. Everything I have, everything I am, and everything I hope to be is all a result of following Jesus. “Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the … Read More
Season Finales…
With the exception of House, every show has ended for the summer. So here are my TV season finale thoughts… Criminal Minds – Amazing finale. My wife called it, that they would end the season bringing that freak Frank back. It was great. This could be the most underrated show on TV. The Office – Out of control. The last 10 seconds had me laughing uncontrollably. CSI – This would the CSI of the Las Vegas variety (I don’t watch the other 2). Great finale. They’ve been building this story line up all season long. I’ve been watching CSI since … Read More
Hey Mr. DJ…
Mark took our worship team to the next level this morning as Ivan, one of our new guys was added to the band as our resident DJ. It was awesome! I’m amazed at what adding another layer of music does. Plus, I was doing a message in Mark 3 on the Sabbath, so I had him come up and lay down some dope beats as I talked about the Sabbath being an opportunity to create rhythm in our lives. He started playing the opening beat to ‘Walk this way” and adding his own flavor to it. I grabbed the guitar … Read More
Book Review: The E-Myth Revisited
As I looked at our church, I decided to re-read The E-Myth because I felt like our systems were weak. If this book emphasizes anything, it’s systems. If you don’t think that having churches should have systems, look at the human body. Your body has systems, and if there working well, that’s called health. The church is a body. So a healthy church has healthy systems. Anyway, I really liked this book (even though the story about Sarah’s Pie Shop got old). Gerber’s challenge is basically right out of Eph. 4:11-12. He would say, “Stop working in your ministry and … Read More
In Case you Missed it…
Here were my favorite posts of the week… – Scott gave us the link to the NY Times article on the New Breed of Evangelicals. Good Article. – Perry’s post of the 10 mistakes Pastors make was excellent. – Steven got serious with this post about what people think. Awesome! – Chris’s post was out of hand. It got me thinking.
New Feature
I get questions now and then about what books I’m reading in preparation for my messages. So I’ve started a list of books that I’m reading called, “Study Resources”. I’m teaching the Gospel of Mark, so that’s what I’m studying and the bottom right-hand column of my blog’s front page you’ll find the books that I’m reading during the series of teachings. Enjoy…
