“It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.” (Luke 23:44-46)
Book Review: The 4-Hour Work Week
I heard so much about The 4-Hour Work Week that I had to pick it up. I loved this book! Tim Ferriss is a very witty writer and very articulate in expressing his ideas. I loved his passion and the resources and tools he gives to accomplish what he’s talking about. Tim’s premise is that people don’t live the life they want because of fear. They stick with a 9-5 job because it offers security when they could be living so much more. Tim’s goal is to go wherever he wants, live wherever he wants and do whatever he wants … Read More
Sunday Stuff…
– Today was nuts! It was over right as I was getting warmed up 🙂 – The services went great (besides me going long… whoops) – We finished our Stripped series and talking about how to finish well in marriage. – I loved this series and loved teaching Song of Solomon, but I’m ready to talk about something else and not have to read the words “Your breasts are like two fawns” 🙂 – We had some guys show up that attended our seminar to see how we roll on Sundays. That was fun. – I am so excited about … Read More
Book Review: Dare to Win
I love books that challenge me to set big goals in all areas of my life and take steps to accomplish them. Dare to Win by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen did just that! It looked at every area of life and caused me to ask the questions, “What do you want?” and “What will you do to get it?” This book delves into why people don’t attempt anything great. The reason is fear. They give some great advice for overcoming fear and living the life you’ve dreamed. There’s definitely stuff I didn’t agree with in the book, but … Read More
What to Do when Your Church is Stuck (Part 5)
#5 – Is there a problem with your systems? Just like the human body, every church has systems. But sometimes we have to see what these systems are producing and ask if we like the result. If we don’t, here’s some things to consider: – What do you want your systems/ process to produce and work backwards – What do you think is the Biblical model for this part of the church (evangelism, discipleship, ministry, etc…)? – Who is doing this well in your area? Ask them questions.
What to Do when Your Church is Stuck (Part 4)
#4 – Is there a spiritual problem? The children of Israel lost the battle of Ai because there was sin in the camp. I’m not saying that’s the reason you’re stuck. I’m simply saying it’s something to consider. A few things to consider: – Before you blast your staff and leaders, search your own heart. Ask God is there is any wicked way in you that needs confession and repentance. – If you think there’s a problem in your staff or leadership, then have the tough conversation sooner rather than later. You’ll be glad you did. – Keep an open … Read More
What to Do when Your Church is Stuck (Part 3)
#3 – Is a there a physical issue that’s causing you to be stuck? Many times the reason we’re stuck is because there aren’t enough seats, enough parking, or enough nursery workers. Think through your church and see if there are any bottlenecks. If people finding it hard to sit themselves, they probably won’t invite their friends. If it’s a fight to get their kids checked into your children’s ministry, they probably won’t be back. If they have to park 2 miles away, they may do it once, but they won’t regularly. Sometimes God want to bless your ministry, but … Read More
Disaster Averted!
Thanks to those of you that let me know my blog’s RSS feed was getting freaky a few days ago. Apparently, those of you who subscribe where getting my posts, plus celebrity UK gossip. While British celebrity gossip has always been a passion of mine (insert sarcasm) this was a weird typepad error that has been fixed. But while we’re on the subject of RSS feeds, why don’t you do yourself the favor of subscribing instead of surfing on to the site? I follow about 15 blogs and because I subscribe to them through an RSS reader, it takes me … Read More
What to Do when Your Church is Stuck (Part 2)
My assumption is that if your church is stuck, you want to get unstuck. Here’s #2… #2 – Is your staff able to go to the next level? Some people can only take you do far. Some people only have a certain level of leadership capability and God brings them into your church for a season and they serve well, but then they can’t turn the corner. This is a reality. If a person isn’t deeply committed to growing as a leader, hitting a leadership lid is inevitable. Here’s some thoughts to keep staff growing: – Keep a book in … Read More
