Yesterday I talked about a plan for planning your financial future. Today I want to give you some books that have really helped me. Smart Couples Finish Rich by David Bach – This book gives a great explanation of all the financial terms that get thrown around. The planner he has in the book as well is fantastic. Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey – there’s no better book to help someone get out of debt and start saving and investing. Money, Possessions, and Eternity by Randy Alcorn – this is the best book on stewardship I have ever read. … Read More
Financial Stuff for Pastors
A couple of weeks w brought in a financial planner to met with our Pastors and talk us about planning for the future. All of us had done some of what he recommended, but he helped us fill in the gaps. From all I’ve read, done, and been advised here’s what I think are the non-negotiables for Pastors in planning their financial future: Life Insurance The stats on death are still hovering right around 100%, so if you’re married and/ or have kids then life insurance is a non-negotiable. I know you think you’re invincible and you never going to … Read More
Sunday Stuff…
– Taught at this church this weekend. Had a good time. – Taught on hearing God’s voice. People really connected with the message – Missed being at Calvary Fellowship today, but I know Mark did a great job teaching – Guesting speaking is something I don’t do much of, but I like it at times. – It allows me to still teach (which I love), but I don’t have to put together a brand new message – Next Sunday we start a series called “Uncensored:Getting Real with God” as we spend 3 weeks in the book of Habakkuk. – I’ve … Read More
Reminders that I’m getting old…
– I can fall asleep just about anywhere and just about anytime (i.e. I slept through all of Wall-E on Monday – that was $7 well spent 🙂 – I’ve become fluent in the language of life insurance, IRA, 401K, 403B, and mutual funds – My daughter is using a fork (with help, but insists on feeding herself) – I find myself thinking about my lawn from time to time – Someone recently said to me, “What would you say to a young guy like me?” (If looks could kill) – My assistant has never seen The Karate Kid and … Read More
What’s the Question?
Had a great meeting with a sharp church planter yesterday and he asked me a question that still has me thinking. He said towards the end of our meeting, “What’s the question I should be asking you but haven’t yet?” Wow! I’ve been thinking about that and asking God, “What’s the question I should be asking YOU but haven’t yet?” What’s the prayer I should be praying but haven’t yet? What’s the dream I should be dreaming but haven’t yet? Questions is how we grow. A friend told me when I was graduating from college, “You don’t have all the … Read More
Sunday Stuff…
– Today was incredible! – We had one service and crammed everyone in (which worked out nicely due to the Holiday weekend) – The energy was amazing! – Our volunteers was blessed by the “break” – I felt like I had the day off since I only had to preach once 🙂 – I think we’re going to do this a couple times a year while we can size wise. It was a huge win for our church! – We finished our TXT series with a bang! This was such a needed series for us. I’m glad we now have … Read More
Happy Independence Day!
40 years ago my parents came to the US from Cuba hoping to make a better life for themselves and their family. They escaped the oppression of a Communist government and embraced the freedom found in America. All my life I’ve heard stories about what Cuba was like and how different things are here in America. While I’m of Cuban descent and appreciate my heritage, I love America. I’m thankful for the opportunities it has given my family to flourish and the freedom it has given me to dream and be anything I want to be. Sometimes we forget how … Read More

Great leadership principles. Walking with God by John Eldredge – This book really challenged me to deepen my walk with God. It’s classic Eldredge. If … Read More
Check the Prayer Requests!
I look over the prayer requests that our people write in their Connection Cards every week. Not only do I look them over because I want to pray for our church and be aware of what’s happening in their lives as their Pastor, I also believe it paints a picture of the spiritual condition of our church. As I looked over this week’s requests, here was the common theme: pray for ______________ that they might come to know Jesus. This brought a smile to my face because it told me that the people at Calvary Fellowship are serious about their … Read More
