Well, what was year 3 like for me? It was a lot the hit show "24". I got to be "Pastor Jack Bauer" and go 24/7 as well. Why? A couple of reasons: #1 – I didn’t take my own advice of not starting things too soon – So when things didn’t go as hoped, I had to become involved. Just like Jack, I was running around like a madman trying to solve every problem. #2 – People were bringing nuclear bombs into the church – OK, that might be stretching it a bit, but they had some pretty explosive … Read More
Why Do we Love Rules so Much?
The Florida Marlins, having shaved mot of their payroll from last year have decided that it’s time for all facial hair to be shaved. This article from the Boston Herald reveals that new Marlins manager Joe Girardi (An Ex-Yankee for those keeping score at home) says he’s going to do what is part of Yankee "Tradition" and allow facial hair (Actually, you can have a mustache on the Yankees, but that’s it). Is this not the most stupid rule ever? Not just because I’ve sported a goatee or beard since I was 18, but why impose rules that aren’t going … Read More
If Church Planting were a TV Show (Part 2)
I’m following the blogs of a few guys who are getting ready to plant churches or have started in the last few months. So I hope what I’m sharing is somewhat helpful. Let me tell you how year 2 was for me in the church planting adventure. If year 2 of Calvary Fellowship was a TV show, it would be "Alias". Why you ask? Because there’s a few things we could learn from Sydney Bristow: #1 – You’re one person playing several roles – I remember answering the phone one day and someone asked for me. So I said, "I … Read More
Can you smell it?
The Superbowl means 1 thing to me (Especially when the Pats aren’t in it): it means that pitchers and catchers report for spring training in 11 days! Yes, sports fans, it means that in Florida there will be Spring Training Baseball in less than 1 month! Add the World Baseball Classic into the mix and you’ve got life as it should be! Life isn’t the same during the baseball off-season. There’s only so many times I can watch my 2 DVD’s of the 2004 Baseball season (Well, that’s not really true). But the point is, I can’t wait until this … Read More
If Church Planting were a TV Show (Part 1)
I’m glad to be hearing about a lot of guys feeling the call to go and plant churches. So let me give you a quick word of advice in a language all of us understand. If church planting were a TV show, year 1 would could be classified as ABC’s "Lost". Why? Several reasons: #1 – Wherever you go, you’re basically going to crash land – I don’t know why we call it planting. We should call it crashing! #2 – You’re trying to figure out how many bodies survived the crash – You may not know what … Read More
My Wish is…
I just figured out how to put one of those Amazon.com wish lists on the side bar of my blog. I looked into it because a bunch of people are rejoicing over packages they’ve received in the mail from random people and I want to rejoice too!
For those who are feeling Nostalgic..
My buddy Chris posted about this amazing website called "The Wayback machine" that shows website through the years. My how things have changed. So I put our web address in and here’s what came up: – Calvary Miami Lakes (Circa 2000) – Calvary Fellowship (Today) I warn you, while entertaining and fun, this is also like looking at an old yearbook picture. Yes, it can be that disturbing!
Don’t Drive angry! Do Not Drive Angry!
“Rise and shine, campers, and don’t forget your booties ’cause it’s cooooold out there today.” “It’s cold out there every day. What is this, Miami Beach?” “Not hardly. So the big question on everybody’s lips.” “On their chapped lips!” “Their chapped lips is, does Phil feel lucky? Punksatawney Phil, that’s right wood chuck chuckers its… GROUND HOG DAY!!!!!! I hope your Groundhog Day is better than the 1st 1,000 that Phil Conners had. Here’s a question: how long do you think Phil Conners relived Groundhog Day?
Book Review: Following Jesus by N.T. Wright
I just finished reading Folllowing Jesus: Biblical Reflections on Discipleship by N.T. Wright. The 2nd half of the book was much stronger than the 1st half. The chapter on the renewed mind was by far the best chapter in the book. His comparison of Naaman the leper and Gehazi, Elisha’s servant was outstanding! I’ve never heard anything like that before. I think that chapter alone was worth the price of admission. However, I think some of the other chapters were a little lacking. The 1st half of the book he gives some overviews of certain books of the Bible, which … Read More
