Book Review: Leading at a Higher Level

Bob FranquizBooks

If there’s only one Ken Blanchard book you ever read, Leading at a Higher Level should be the one you pick. Basically, Ken and his team take just about every book he’s ever written, cut out all the fluff and give you the essential principles that each book contains. In each chapter it seems as though he’s moving through his catalog of writings and giving you the essence of what each book says. Here’s my only critique: it’s too long. Because he had several people working on the book, the writers stumble over each other in their ideas and repeat … Read More

Book Review: Overcoming Growth Barriers

Bob FranquizBooks

I started and finished Overcoming Growth Barriers by Michael Fletcher today. This is what happens when you spend 3 hours in a waiting room to a Doctor’s office. Anyway, the book looked interesting so I picked it up. I didn’t like the title, because I think a lot of the church growth stuff is crap. It’s usually written by guys who’ve never lead, planted, or Pastored anything in their lives. So I’m a bit weary about books like this. Michael Fletcher on the other hand, is a practitioner who is reaching people in his area. What I liked most about … Read More

Book Review: The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing

Bob FranquizBooks

A friend recommended The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing by Al Ries and Jack Trout to me and I enjoyed it. It has gotten me thinking about the kind of perception that people have of church and what is needed to change the perception. Perhaps the reason why church plants tend to reach most unchurched people is because they’re able to start with a clean slate and don’t have the baggage that other churches might. Some are afraid of the word “marketing”. But every church markets themselves to one degree or another. A sign in front of your building is … Read More

OK, that’s Enough!

Bob FranquizChurch

This just in: The Church Report has come out with a list of the top 50 influential Christians. Can we just decide that we’ve all had enough of the lists? I think some church leaders are going to start rioting in the streets if we don’t stop this “list” business (I may be among them). What’s funny is, I hadn’t heard of several people on the list. But if we want to keep the whole list thing going, how about someone publish a list that people might find interesting to read. How about “The Top 50 most annoying Christians of … Read More

Book Review: The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding and a couple thoughts of my own…

Bob FranquizBooks

I just finished The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding by Al and Laura Ries. It was very good. To me, the overarching theme was simple: narrow your focus. This is the theme of another Al Ries book, but it’s good advice. Narrowing your focus allows you to be known for something that you do well, rather than having a 100 things you’re mediocre at. Most churches try to do too much. Everyone says that, but no one pulls the plug on anything they’re already doing. We decided to narrow our focus a couple of years ago after being challenged by … Read More

Best Gift

Bob FranquizUncategorized

People have been so kind to Carey and I giving us gifts for our daughter that’s going to be here in a month. But one of my favorites has been this. Someone gave us a CD of all Metallica songs in lullaby form. They have Coldplay, U2, Nirvana, the Cure and a bunch of others. It’s good to get rock music instilled in your kids early. Because if my daughter ends up liking Hip-Hop, I might lose my mind…

Every Time

Bob FranquizChurch

God has been doing something with me lately that’s blowing me away. Every time I think of someone in our church that I haven’t seen in a while, I’ve decided to start praying for them daily. Then I see them the next Sunday. This has happened a bunch of times in the last couple of months. It has been a faith builder and I have seen my love for the people in our church grow as well.

Downsizing…

Bob FranquizUncategorized

We made a hard decision yesterday. We decided to cancel our Momentum conference. Why? Honestly, there wasn’t enough interest to justify a full blown 2-day event. So we’re going to host a 1/2 day round table gathering for those that are interested. It will be held on March 2nd from 9AM-12PM here in Miami Lakes. There is going to be limited seating, so if you want to attend, email me. I actually feel pretty good about it. When we planned this conference, I didn’t know my wife would be giving birth 3 weeks before the conference was set to happen. … Read More

The Experience Economy Book Review

Bob FranquizBooks

I saw James Pilmore and Joe Pine, the authors of The Experience Economy at Catalyst in 2004 and I wasn’t impressed. However, I understand why the Catalyst guys invited them , because their book was fantastic. This is one of those books I’ve been meaning to read, but 2007 was the year I finally got around to it. A few great thoughts they had: – What would we do differently if we charged admission? – Focus on what people will remember – How does your process affect what you offer? – A brand must be tweaked every 5 years – … Read More

New Series This Sunday!

Bob FranquizChurch

I’m excited to kick off 2007 with a new series called “Shift”. We’re going to look at our mission as a church and the 3 vital relationships that we all need. I think January is a great time to share vision and get everyone back on the same page.
