Beam Me Up, Scotty!

Scotty
I am a huge Star Trek fan! I used to watch the original series with my grandmother when I was a kid and I never stopped watching. I thought about that when I heard the news that James Doohan (Scotty) died today. There’s something that happens to me when I hear the news that someone I know or know or has died. I get this feeling that the clock is ticking on my life as well.

It made me think about the church that I have the privilege of leading. There are people who are going to show up this weekend that are going to give us 1 chance. There are people that are going to give “Church” one last try. There are people who will hear us this Sunday and then step into eternity. Why do I say this? I say this because none of us is going to live on this planet forever. At some point, everyone steps into eternity. We are Pastors. Eternity is the language we speak. It’s the currency we carry. It’s the air we breathe. Yet too many people live as though they won’t reach the end of their days like Scotty. That’s where we become the “voice calling out in the wilderness.” I pray this weekend we can be that voice once again…

“I’m going to preach the gospel here. If you want to play church, you play it, but you play it somewhere else. I’m preaching as a dying man to dying men; I’m preaching as one who may never preach again…” – Henry Mahan
